Allambie Heights is a family suburb 17 km north-east of the CBD. The name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning “peaceful place” and it lives up to it. Set on a ridgeline bordered by Manly Dam Reserve, Garigal National Park, and Allenby Park, it’s about as bushland as suburban Sydney gets.
Most homes went up from the late 1940s through the 1970s. They started as modest fibro cottages on big blocks over 650 square metres, though most have been rebuilt into proper family homes by now. Streets like Dobroyd Road, Roosevelt Avenue, and Tobruk Avenue wind through the bushy terrain.
The original plumbing in a lot of these homes is earthenware and galvanised steel. Well past its design life. Tree root intrusion from the surrounding bushland is the number one cause of blocked drains around here. Eucalypt and turpentine roots go straight for the moisture in ageing sewer lines. And the sandstone under the suburb makes traditional pipe digging expensive and difficult. Pipe relining is the go-to fix for most Allambie Heights homeowners.
