Castle Cove is an exclusive residential suburb on the Lower North Shore, about 11km north of the CBD in the City of Willoughby. It overlooks Sugarloaf Bay from the western shore of Middle Harbour. The suburb is named after Innisfallen Castle, a sandstone mansion built in 1903 that’s still standing as a local landmark.
The Hooker Corporation developed the area from the 1950s through the early 1970s. Many of those original homes are still here on generous blocks along streets like Doris Harding Drive and Doris Fitton Avenue. More than half of Castle Cove’s land is actually parkland, including Harold Reid Reserve, Willis Park, and the old Explosives Reserve near Bantry Bay.
All that bushland is great to live near but it plays havoc with plumbing. Mature eucalypts and angophoras push their roots into pipes underground. The sandstone and clay soils shift with moisture changes, stressing old pipework even more. A lot of homes sit on sloping blocks with retaining walls and terraced gardens, which makes traditional pipe repair a real pain. That’s why pipe relining is so popular with Castle Cove homeowners.
