Castlecrag is a unique harbourside suburb on the Lower North Shore, about 9km north of the CBD in the City of Willoughby. Designed by Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin in the 1920s, the suburb sits on a peninsula between Middle Harbour and Middle Cove.
The Griffin-designed homes and later mid-century builds blend into the bushland landscape. Many still have original plumbing from the 1920s through 1960s. Ageing earthenware and clay drainage pipes are common and they crack, attract tree roots, and fail at the joints over time.
The dense native bushland bordering the suburb sends aggressive root systems into underground pipes. Edinburgh Road, The Parapet, and The Rampart run through heavily treed areas where blocked drains from root intrusion are one of the most common plumbing callouts. The sloping terrain down to the harbour foreshore makes traditional excavation difficult and costly, which is why pipe relining is popular with Castlecrag homeowners.
