Fixing a leaking tap

The Hidden Cost of a water leak

That drip is costing you more than you think

A leaking tap is easy to put off. It’s “just a drip.” But a tap that drips once a second can waste in the order of 9,000 litres of water a year, water you’re paying Sydney Water for, around the clock, while you sleep.

Left alone, a small leak rarely stays small. The constant moisture stains basins and benchtops, encourages mould around the fixture, and the underlying wear keeps getting worse, so the cheap early fix turns into a bigger one. That’s before the part most people don’t mention: the noise that won’t let you settle at night.

If your tap is leaking, the sensible move is to have it repaired sooner rather than later, for the water bill, for the fixture, and for your sanity. We can usually have it sorted the same day.

How it starts

What’s actually causing your tap to leak

Most leaking taps come down to one of a handful of worn parts. Knowing which one tells you whether it’s a quick fix or a slightly bigger job and our plumber will show you exactly what they find before quoting.

Worn tap washer

A worn tap washer

The most common cause of a dripping tap. The rubber washer that seals the water off has hardened or worn, so water seeps past even when the tap is fully closed. A straightforward replacement on traditional taps.

Perished O-ring

A perished O-ring

If your mixer tap is leaking from the base, the spout or the swivel, rather than dripping from the outlet, a perished O-ring inside the body is usually the culprit. Common on kitchen and bathroom mixers.

Damaged Tap Seat

A damaged tap seat

The “seat” is the brass surface the washer presses against. Over years of use, and with Sydney’s older fixtures, that surface corrodes or scores. Fit a fresh washer onto a damaged seat and it’ll start dripping again within weeks. We re-grind (re-seat) the surface so the new washer actually seals, the step most DIY fixes miss.

Ceramic cartridge

A failed ceramic cartridge

Modern mixer taps use a ceramic disc cartridge instead of a washer. When it wears, the tap drips, gets stiff, or leaks from the handle. The cartridge is replaced as a unit.

Dripping tap

“I changed the washer and it still drips.”

You’re not doing it wrong, you’ve almost certainly hit a damaged tap seat or a worn cartridge that a washer can’t fix. This is the point where it’s worth getting a plumber in, and it’s a routine job for us.

What We Fix

Taps we repair across Sydney

We repair and replace every common tap type found in Sydney homes and businesses:

Kitchen mixer taps

Dripping spouts, leaks from the base or swivel, stiff handles.

Bathroom & basin taps

Vanity mixers, three-piece tapware, wall-mounted spouts.

Shower taps

Dripping shower outlets, leaking shower mixers and diverters.

Laundry & washing-machine taps

Worn laundry taps and washing-machine connections that weep or won’t shut off.

Outdoor & garden taps

Leaking garden taps, hose-bib leaks and seized outdoor taps.

Toilet & cistern taps

Leaking cistern stop taps and inlet valves.

If your tap drips, leaks from the handle, leaks from the base, or won’t fully turn off, we’ll diagnose it and tell you the most cost-effective fix, repair or, where the tapware is past it, a clean replacement.

Our Minimum Standards

No boot prints, no mess, no exceptions

Clean uniforms. Clean boots. Drop sheets down before we start. Tools, packaging, and offcuts out with us when we leave. If we need to open a wall or ceiling, we’ll tell you first and leave the area tidy.

  • Drop sheets laid before any work begins
  • Shoe covers worn inside your home
  • All debris, offcuts, and packaging removed when we leave

  • Any access to walls, ceilings, or other areas discussed with you before we touch them

FAQ

Leaking Tap frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the things people ask us most when something’s gone wrong.

A leaking tap wastes water continuously, a tap dripping once a second can waste roughly 9,000 litres a year, which you pay for on your Sydney Water bill. Left unrepaired, the leak worsens, can stain or damage the fixture, and encourages mould. Repairing it early is cheaper than dealing with the flow-on damage later.
This usually means the tap seat (the surface the washer presses against) is worn or corroded, so a new washer can’t seal against it, or the tap uses a ceramic cartridge rather than a washer. Both are routine repairs for a licensed plumber; we re-grind the seat or replace the cartridge so the leak actually stops.
A mixer leaking from the base or swivel is usually a perished O-ring inside the tap body rather than a worn outlet washer. We replace the O-ring (or the cartridge if needed) to seal it.
Yes. We repair kitchen, bathroom, basin, shower, laundry, washing-machine, garden/outdoor and toilet cistern taps. If it leaks, drips or won’t shut off, we can help.
